It’s the cultural capital of Belize. And while it’s mostly known for its vibrant culture and its “kick back and relax” atmosphere, there’s also plenty to do both in and around this colorful town. Here are five things you should definitely put on your itinerary when you visit Dangriga.

1: Learn About Garifuna Culture

Dangriga is the home of Garifuna culture in Belize. It’s where Punta Rock, a genre of Belizean music, was born and where you can discover Garifuna art, traditions, and food.

Learn the history of the Garifuna people at the Gulisi Garifuna Museum, get the chance to create a traditional drum alongside Belize’s first-ever female drum maker Daytha Rodriguez, and try out the delicious local cuisine.

One of our favorite traditional foods is Hudut: mashed plantains served with a coconut-based fish soup (Sere).

Oh, and did we mention it’s delicious?

2: Visit Studio Gallery Cayetano

Penn Cayetano is a renowned Garifuna-Belizean artist and a legendary musician, nicknamed the King of Punta Rock. His studio and art gallery can be found right in the heart of Dangriga.

At Studio Gallery Cayetano, which Penn Cayetano founded with his wife Ingrid in 2009, visitors get the chance to speak with the legend himself, browse his many paintings and murals, and enjoy beautifully crafted textile art.

3: Hike through Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

If you’re looking for some close encounters with nature, you don’t need to travel very far. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is situated just 35 minutes away from town. This world-famous nature reserve is home to almost 200 Jaguars and boasts beautiful waterfalls, stunning mountain views, and over twelve miles of trails through the tropical rainforest.

4: Visit the Marie Sharp Factory

Ask any Belizean what’s one thing they can’t go without and you’ll discover that “Marie Sharps Pepper Sauce” is quite the popular answer. While you’re in Dangriga, you can take a trip down to the place where this beloved Belizean staple is made.

The Marie Sharp Factory is located in Hope Creek Village—just a short drive away from Pelican Beach Resorts. There, you can learn how the sauces, along with many of their other items like jams and jellies, are made. There’s even a gift shop, where you can buy some of your new favorite hot sauce.

5: Go Ziplining at Bocawina National Park

Thrill-seekers traveling to Belize, rejoice! Bocawina National Park is home to one of Central America’s longest ziplines. The best part? It’s only about fourteen miles outside of town. Get to enjoy a brief hike before zipping through the forest canopy on over two miles of pure exhilaration.

There’s so much to do and see in the culture capital. Take your time and experience it all. Then when you’re done, come back to your room at Pelican Beach Resorts where you can unwind and relax.
